Traveling from Iloilo to Guimaras will no longer entail a risky boat ride that can even lead to tragedy once inter-island bridge connecting the islands of Western Visayas is completed.

In a press briefing Wednesday, Build, Build, Build Committee Chairperson Anna Mae Lamentillo disclosed the Department of Public Work and Highway’s (DPWH) plan to build an inter-island bridge that would pass through Panay, Guimaras, and Negros, which will provide a road network from one island to another in the region that will be longer than the existing longest bridge in the country.
The project has been revealed in the past as part of the pipeline projects of 17 short and long span bridges that will be built across the Philippines.
With what happened over the weekend off Iloilo Strait, where three motorboats capsized due to squall or the sudden occurrence of strong winds and forceful waves, killing 31 people as of Wednesday, the Panay-Guimaras-Negros Link Bridge Project was brought up.
The 19.2-kilometer Panay-Guimaras-Negros Link Bridge, however, is still under a feasibility study, and would be under a feasibility study funded by China.
“The feasibility study—may requirement po kasi. For an inter-island bridge for example, may required na pre-feasibility study, feasibility study and detailed engineering design,” Lamentillo explained.
“Because of the magnitude of this project, our longest bridge is about two kilometers which is times 10 of what we want to achieve for Panay-Guimaras-Negros. So we’re really very careful as to yung construction and yung design for this particular project,” she added.
Lamentillo said even before the deadly incident happened last weekend, the bridge project is a priority project of the government. The feasibility project will be completed within the year, she noted.
“We are building a series of short and long span bridges linking island provinces to eventually connect Mindanao and Visayas to Luzon via land travel,” Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar said during the Pre-State of the Nation Address forum in July.
“It involves the construction of 17 short and long span bridges with a total length of 175,650 meters and investment cost of about P1.7 trillion pesos or $32 billion,” he added.
