Two public markets are set to open in Caloocan City to accommodate more than 200 vendors who will be removed from the streets and sidewalks of Metro Manila's largest barangay.
Jay Bernardo, city's Department of Public Safety and Traffic Management (DPSTM) chief, told Manila Bulletin that the new public market in Phase 9 in Barangay Bagong Silang is already 90 percent complete; while the renovation of the old public market in Phase 3 in the same barangay is now ongoing.
Au Ciego, City Planning and Development Department head, said in a recent interview that the phase 9 market will be inaugurated in two to three months.
The two one-story public markets can accommodate around 400 sidewalk and street vendors.
The 200 vendors selling outside a church in Phase 1 will be relocated in Phase 9; while several vendors along Kanlaon St. in Phase 2 and 5 are expected to be relocated in Phase 3.
The relocation of the sidewalk and street vendors is in compliance with President Duterte's recent order "to reclaim all public roads that are being used for private ends" within 60 days.
"Though, even before the President's directive, Mayor Oca Malapitan already wanted to relocate the street vendors to clear the streets of obstructions," Bernardo said.
The two public markets also aim to activate and boost the economy in the said areas, Ciego added.
Bernardo said that the city government is already rushing the completion of the two public markets, as ordered by the city's chief executive.
"We already asked the contractor to rush the construction," he said.
"We've added more men and even started cleaning the public market in Phase 9," Bernardo added. "We're also just waiting for the installation of the septic tank."
The DPSTM chief assured that the vendors "will not get hurt" in paying for their rental fees as they will just need to pay a little.
The construction of the public markets also aims to provide an avenue for both Caloocan and non-Caloocan residents to generate source of income, Bernardo said.
Bernardo also said that Mayor Oca already talked to transport groups to build a transport terminal in Phase 9 for the convenience of the residents who will go to the market.
"For the meantime, residents who will go to the new public market will not have to pay for jeepney rides ," he bared.
