2.5-km portion of Mahaplag-Hilongos Road missing link under construction

By Betheena Kae Unite A 2.5-kilometer portion of a 27-kilometer missing link of the Mahaplag-Hilongos Road in the province of Leyte is now under construction, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced.

The road network, according to DPWH-Regional Office 8 Assistant Director Eric Apayana, will traverse Barangays Maligaya, Concepcion, Cacao, Agutayan, and Hampangan in the Municipality of Hilongos and Barangay San Isidro in the Municipality of Mahaplag. For the 2.5-kilometer portion, a total of P85 million was allocated to cover the opening and construction of the road with provisions of cross drainage and slope protection. A resident of Barangay Caco, Virigilia Tapan, expressed expectations that the road network will open more services like electric and water utilities to the interior barangays. Another resident from Barangay Agutayan, Edgar AraÃ±ez said that it has been their dream to have a paved road, instead of the muddy old road. According to the department, once fully completed, the 48.22-kilometer road, stretching from Barangay San Isidro in the Municipality of Mahaplag to Barangay San Roque in the Municipality of Hilongos, Leyte, will serve as an alternate route from Tacloban City to Hilongos. It is expected to reduce travel time from three hours and 22 minutes to just two hours and 50 minutes. Started in 2017, the Mahaplag-Hilongos Road Project is implemented under theâ€˜Build, Build, Build infrastructure program and is expected to be completed by 2022.
