An architecture student of Batangas State University (BSU) won the grand prize in the professional category of the ‘Bayan Mo, Ilakbay Mo’ painting contest.
Jerwind Magnaye tells the story of his winning artwork ‘Repinadong Mugmog’—an acrylic on canvass about children who plays games of the 90’s which depicts the characteristics of a Batangueño.
(LYKA MANALO / MANILA BULLETIN) Jerwind Magnaye, 23, from Bauan, Batangas, received a plaque and P30,000 cash during the awarding ceremony Monday at the SM City Batangas. Magnaye said his winning acrylic on canvass entitled “Repinadong Mugmog” depicts a memorable childhood. Repinadong Mugmog means refined sugar grains that covered and made the londres bread more appetizing. Bauan is known for the bread. “I mostly preferred children as subjects of my paintings, this time they play some games of the 90’s such as acting like an army, making jewelry, playing SOS among others,” Magnaye said. The painting contest is part of Lakbay Sining, a program to revive arts appreciation launched by the Batangas Culture and Arts Council (BCAC) Visual Arts Sector of the Provincial Tourism Office. BCAC in partnership with Grupo Sining Batangueño (GSB) travelled to different historical towns in the province to conduct a seminars and workshops for teachers and students. This year’s journey started from Batangas City, Lian, Calatagan and Rosario. The program was properly coordinated with the respective local government units (LGU). The painting competition is open to all Batangueño artists who wish to showcase their talent and willing to be trained to further improve their skill. Other winners in the Professional Category are Randy Macalindong of Tuy town (2nd place) and Ian Glenn Garcia of Lemery (3rd place). In the Student Category, Genel Anne May Añonuevo of Rosario was first place, Maxine Ileana De Villa second place, and Christmae Paglinawan third. Bernardo Oronos Jr., Vince Martin Macatangay and Limuel Aguila. all from Padre Garcia town bagged the awards from first to third place in the on-the-spot painting contest. The Juror’s Choice went to Cheyzer Manalo (Bauan); Ian Joseph Semira (Ibaan); John Axl Asuncion (Cuenca); Florna Panopio and Loriel Castillo (Bauan). All artworks in the competition are on display at the painting exhibit in SM City Batangas.
