By Danny Estacio LOPEZ, Quezon – Four people died and five others were injured when the van they were riding was struck head-on by a passenger bus on Maharlika Highway in this town near midnight Thursday. Major Glen Miralles, Lopez’s chief of police, identified the fatalities as Paterno Carnate, 47, driver of the van, Raymundo Acebuche, 56; Maryjoy Claire Acebuche, 48, and Raquel Acebuche, a 20-year-old student. Injured were Rafael Acebuche, 20; Roselyn Acebuche, 24; Bilito Guliman, 52; Joy Ericka Guliman, 15; Maritess Cerujano, 47 and Daisy Cerujano, 20, all residents of Laoang, Northern Samar. The bus driver, Marlon Ricon, 37, and a resident of Muntinlupa City, was arrested by police, Miralles said. Police reported that the P&O passenger bus, with license plate DXK 268, which was on the way to Bicol, was trying to pass a motorcycle when it smashed into the oncoming Toyota Hi-Ace van (POX 822) carrying the victims. The out-of-control bus then slammed into two motorbicycles parked on the road shoulder. The van was traveling to Manila when the incident happened. Police charged Ricon with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides, physical injuries and damage to property before the prosecutor’s office, Friday.
