Poe urges gov't agencies to strictly enforce 20% student fare discount

(Senate of the Philippines / MANILA BULLETIN) The new law requires the government to come up with mechanisms to ensure the mandatory grant of the student fare discount privilege. It applies to all modes of public transport including buses, jeepneys, taxis, tricycles, passenger trains, aircrafts, and marine vessels, among others. Students should be given the discount the entire time they are enrolled, including weekends, and holidays. "We call on the concerned government agencies to properly implement the law and guarantee students their full benefits, while keenly seeing to it that commitments to the transport sector, such as tax deductions and subsidies, are fulfilled and their rights not ignored," Poe said. The law tasks the Department of Transportation and its attached agencies, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB); Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA); Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB); as well as the Manila Light Rail Transit System, Metro Rail Transit, and the Philippine National Railways, to implement the mandatory fare discount and entertain complaints on violating public utilities. Students can also lodge their complaints with the Office of the Local Chief Executive for erring tricycle drivers. Poe, chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Services, said she was glad that President Duterte signed the law which she co-sponsored in the Senate. She said the mandatory fare discount would ease the burden of students and their parents amid various expenses for their education. Poe added this will also encourage student to go to school every day and be more determined to study. Previously, the student discount covered only land public transportation utilities. To avail of the discount, students should present their school identification card or current validated enrolment form supported by a government-issued ID.
