Councilor seeks inquiry on Imus school food poisoning

By Anthony Giron  IMUS CITY, Cavite – A councilor called for an inquiry, Monday (July 15), into the reported contaminated "iced milk tea" that made 13 junior high school students fall ill at the Imus Institute of Science and Technology (IIST)-Dimasalang Campus in Barangay Poblacion IV-D in this capital city. Imus Institute of Science and Technology (IIST)-Dimasalang Campus (FACEBOOK/ MANILA BULLETIN) Imus Institute of Science and Technology (IIST)-Dimasalang Campus (FACEBOOK/ MANILA BULLETIN) Adrian Jay Advincula, chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (City Council) Committee on Education and Culture and Health and Sanitation, sought the inquiry, in aid of legislation, to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the drinks that were allegedly sold at the IIST-Annex's Garden Cafe last Tuesday. Advincula deemed the inquiry necessary to check the facts, and take the appropriate measures and actions that will prevent a repeat of the incident. The councilor, citing a report from Dr. Randy Calingasan, city health officer, said that at least 13 students were found to have consumed the contaminated "iced milk tea" that was being sold at the school cafeteria. "As per report of Dr. Calingasan this day (Monday), there are 13 students confirmed  to have been afflicted by a certain bacteria from the iced milk tea as their laboratory examination revealed" Advincula told this reporter at his office after the regular Monday session at the City Hall's Legislative Building. At least 41 students were brought to the Our Lady of the Pillar Medical Center (OLPMC) in the city's  Barangay Bayan Luma II for treatment Tuesday and Wednesday after they complained of stomach pains and other discomfort. Most students were discharged from the hospital after treatment Wednesday. Classes were suspended at the IIST-Annex on Thursday and Friday and that the Garden Cafe were closed until further notice. IIST Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Loida Sta. Maria and OLPMC President Gima Aniceto had earlier looked into the incident, so with City Mayor Emmanuel Leonardo Maliksi and his sanitary inspection team. The IIST is a private school long operating in the city.. Its main campus is located on Nueno Avenue, with an annex or the Dimasalang Campus on Poblacion Road.
