Duterte to back Romualdez if he runs for vice president in 2022

By Argyll Geducos  President Duterte revealed he will support Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez should he decide to run for Vice President in the 2022 national elections. Rep. Martin Romualdez (FACEBOOK / MANILA BULLETIN) In a text message, Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo confirmed that Duterte will support Romualdez, but said the President did not state any reason why. Panelo also said that Duterte has not made any other advance endorsements for the 2022 elections aside from the one he made for Romualdez. Early this week, Duterte endorsed Romualdez as the House of Representatives' Majority Floor Leader. Romualdez was one of the top three lawmakers eyeing for the position of House Speaker. Duterte on Monday endorsed Taguig City Representative Alan Peter Cayetano for the House Speaker position. He will be sharing the term with Marinduque Representative Lord Allan Velasco. According to Duterte, he chose Cayetano because he was the first one who expressed intention to him of wanting to be the House Speaker. The President said Cayetano told him he wanted to be speaker since the campaign period. "Siya nga una nagsabi sa akin (Cayetano was the first to approach me), so I promised him. Then Lord, sabi ko (I told him), 'Let us see.' Kay (For) Romualdez, sabi ko (I said), 'Let us see what develops. There might be some developments,'" he said. "Then pagka ganito (when something happens and), it's time for me to talk, I will insist na kung ano yung pinagusapan natin, yun ang sundan natin (that we follow our agreement)," he added.
