Disaster officials maintain earthquake alert status

By Joseph Jubelag GENERAL SANTOS CITY- The Office of the Civil Defense has not lowered the earthquake alert status amid the series of aftershocks caused by 5.6 magnitude earthquake that jolted a large part of Central Mindanao region Tuesday night. (JOSEPH JUBELAG / MANILA BULLETIN) Adrian Morales, OCD-12 training unit chief, said disaster officials are monitoring the updates on the damage of the earthquake whose epicenter was located in Makilala, North Cotabato. He said several towns in North Cotabato had ordered the suspension of classes as PHIVOLCS monitored some 140 aftershocks which were felt in adjacent areas of Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato, Bukidnon and  Davao del Sur. Scores of medical personnel and patients had vacated the Kidapawan Doctor’s hospital in Kidapawan City amid the strong tremor and sought temporary refuge at the city gymnasium. In Koronadal City, South Cotabato, local disaster officials reported the suspension of classes in Marbel Elementary School after structural cracks were discovered in several school buildings as a result of the earthquake. City disaster risk reduction management officer Cyrus Urbano said students were advised to vacate the damaged building as technical personnel from the Department of Public Works and Highways inspected the defective buildings. OCD officials said no casualties were reported but several public infrastructure and residential buildings were affected by the earthquake.
