Boholano priest installed as Butuan bishop

By Mike Crismundo BUTUAN CITY – A Boholano was officially installed on Tuesday as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Butuan. Cosme Damian Almedilla was formally installed as the third bishop of the Diocese of Butuan, which covers two provinces and three cities in Northeastern Mindanao or Caraga region. The 59-year old Almedilla’s installation at St. Joseph Cathedral was led by Apostolic Nuncio Gabriele Giordano Caccia, along with Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle and Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma in ceremonies attended by 28 bishops and 200 priests. Almedilla, was appointed by Pope Francis in March this year. Before his appointment, Almedilla served the assistant pastoral director of the Archdiocese of Talibon in Bohol. In his message, the prelate has asked for prayers and support from the Catholic faithful. “I choose to obey God’s calling. I need God, yes we need Him,” he told before big crowd of Catholic devotees who attended the installation on Tuesday. The Bishop also served as parish priest of the Holy Child Parish in Ubay, Bohol. He was ordained as priest on Agust 4, 1987 after his formation in Saint John XXIII College Seminary, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon and the Loyola School of Theology of Ateneo de Manila University. A native of Bohol province, he was the third bishop to serve the Diocese of Butuan. The first was Bishop Carmelo Morelos, who served from 1967 to 1994 and Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos, who died in October 2017.
