1,800 new lawyers take oath before SC at PICC

(Jansen Romero / MANILA BULLETIN) Chief Justice Lucas P. Bersamin led the Supreme Court (SC) in administering the oath for those who passed the 2018 bar examinations. Starting tomorrow (June 14), the new lawyers can start the signing in the Roll of Attorneys at the SC offices on Padre Faura Street, Ermita, Manila. The new lawyers were led by Sean James B. Borja who topped the examinations with a rating of 89.3060 percent.  He is a graduate of the Ateneo de Manila University (AdeMU). The other topnotchers are Marcley Augustus D. Natu-el, University of San Carlos (USC), 87.5300 percent, second place; Mark Laurence C. Badayos, USC, 85.8420, third;  Daniel John A. Fordan, AdeMU, 85.4430, fourth; Katrina Monica C. Gaw, AdeMU, 85.4210, fifth; Nadine P. Tongco, University of the Philippines (UP), 85.0320, sixth; Patricia O. Sevilla, UP, 84.8590, seventh; Kathrine T. Ting, Dela Salle University-Manila, 84.8570, eighth; Jebb Linus Q. Cane, USC, 84.8050; and Alen Joel R. Pita, USC, 84.6930, tenth. Associate Justice Mariano C. del Castillo was the chair of the 2018 bar examinations committee.  Associate Justice Estela M. Perlas Bernabe will be the chairperson for the 2019 bar examinations. The 2018 bar examiners were Atty. Carlo L. Cruz (Political & Public International Law); Atty. Hans Leo J. Cacdac (Labor Law & Social Legislation); Atty. Ma. Ngina Teresa V. Chan-Gonzaga (Civil Law); Atty. Carlos G. Baniqued (Taxation); Dean Cesar L. Villanueva (Mercantile Law); (Retired Court of Appeals) Justice Edgardo P. Cruz (Criminal Law); Atty. Tranquil G.S. Salvador III (Remedial Law); and Atty. Regina P. Geraldez (Legal Ethics & Practical Exercises). Earlier, the SC had approved a policy to designate two examiners per subject for the 2019 bar examinations. Previous examinations had only one examiner per bar subject. The new policy provides: “Every bar subject shall be divided into two parts. Each examiner shall be assigned a specific scope to formulate questions. “During the examinations, each Bar examinee shall be given one questionnaire containing Parts I and II and two conjoined booklets (marked Part I and II), where answers corresponding to each part of the questionnaire shall be written. “Each booklet shall contain a card wherein the grade or rating received by the Bar examinee for each part shall be indicated. After the examinations, Part I booklets will be released to the first examiner simultaneous with the release of Part II booklets to the second examiner for checking in order to expedite the checking of booklets while ensuring the quality of assessing them.”
