ONE Championship: Folayang excited to test skills against Alvarez

by Ernest Hernandez On August 2, 2019, former ONE Championship Lightweight Champion Eduard "Landslide" Folayang is slated to battle veteran fighter Eddie Alvarez at the Mall of Asia Arena. It will be the first time Folayang will step in the cage after losing his title to Shinya Aoki on March 31 in Japan. The fight with Alvarez will be his first step to earn another title shot but it won’t come easy as his opponent seeks to avenge his first round loss against Timofey Nastyukhin. Eduard Folayang (ONE Championship photo) Eduard Folayang (ONE Championship photo) Nonetheless, Folayang has been looking forward to this day since Alvarez signed with ONE Championship. “I was happy given the opportunity to test myself against veteran and high level fighter,” said Folayang to Manila Bulletin Sports Online. Alvarez has an impressive fight resume owning titles in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Bellator. With high expectations upon entering the ONE roster, Alvarez had a bitter taste of competition by losing in the first round via TKO against Timofey Nastyukhin at the 4:05 mark. Aware that his opponent seeks to redeem himself, Folayang expects his opponent to throw in everything including the kitchen sink during their match. Studying his opponent for years, Folayang knows Alvarez’ tendencies which he finds similar to himself. “It’s in the same area of my strength which is striking so it's about who’s game plan will prevail,” said Folayang. “Of course I’m doing my best to approach it in a different way but we both know our own strengths.” The stacked fight card will also feature ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Jonathan Haggerty and Demetrious Johnson. Folayang will be joined by his Team Lakay stablemates Honorio Banario and Danny Kingad who will fight Timofey Nastyukhin and Kairat Akhmetov respectively for their respective weight class at the World Grand Prix Semi-Finals. The "Landslide" is elated to get the home crowd advantage and invites everyone to support them in August. “Inviting everyone to come and watch the stacked card of One Championship on August 2 and I’m sure you will not miss the excitement and a history that will be unveiled,” said Folayang.
