Imus to hold cremation rites for worn-out PH flags

By the Philippine News Agency IMUS CITY, Cavite -- This city, tagged as ‘Flag Capital of the Philippines’, will cremate for the first time worn-out national flags on June 11, a day before the country observes its 121st Independence Day. (Ali Vicoy / MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) Thousands of old, damaged or faded national flags stored by the city for over a decade will be burned during "Huling Parangal sa Watawat ng Pilipinas (Final Honor for the Philippine Flag) at the city's Heritage Park in Barangay Alapan 2-B. City Information Officer Jay Saquilayan said worn-out flags should not be thrown away but should be formally burned to avoid misuse, as well as to give importance to the national flag. The ashes of the burned flags will be placed in an urn and buried in a flag grave in the area while a patriotic song will be sung. "The city government, tagged as Flag Capital of the Philippines, is planning to hold the rites yearly starting this year in accordance with the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines,” Saquilayan said.
