Suspect in Negros child's rape-slay arrested in Iloilo

(PHOTO COURTESY OF JINN SIATITA / VIA GLAZYL MASCULINO / MANILA BULLETIN) Master Sergeant Hazel Dorado, head of the Women and Children’s Protection Desk (WCPD), said the charges against Mark Besa, 39, were filed before the City Prosecutor’s Office. Besa was arrested at his relative’s house in Ajuy, Iloilo, Monday afternoon. Several residents of the city trooped to the City Prosecutor’s Office to express their anger against Besa, Dorado said. Police prevented the situation from getting out of hand, she added. Dorado said Besa admitted in an extrajudicial statement to killing the girl, claiming he was under the influence of illegal drugs at the time. He, however, denied raping her. Besa was last seen with the child on June 3, when he asked her to buy cigarettes. That night, her body was found stuffed in a sack in a lot not far from his house. Dorado said the autopsy results showed that the girl died from severe head injuries and there were indications that she was raped. Dorado said Besa fled to Iloilo through a stolen pumpboat and hid at his relative’s house. An additional charge of robbery will be filed against Besa. He is detained at the police station.
