Dalmao, 49, is the fourth bishop of the Prelature of Isabela in the Muslim province of Basilan and the first Filipino Claretian to join the College of Bishops. He succeeds Archbishop Jumoad who was transferred to Ozamiz in 2016.
The CBCP said, Dalmao was serving as General Prefect of Formation of the Claretian Missionaries in Rome, Italy when Pope Francis appointed him as the new bishop of Isabela on March 25. The bishop has previously served in Basilan following his ordination in 1997 when he managed a project for the indigenous Samal-Badjau.
From Basilan, he was named Prefect of Students in 2000 and three years later, became Novice Master while serving as Prefect of
Formation of the Claretian Philippine Province. In 2010, he was elected provincial superior of the Claretian congregation. While serving as superior, he also served as co-chairperson of the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines until his election as council member to the Claretian general government in 2005.
The Prelature of Isabela was erected in 1963 and is located in the province of Basilan, and its component cities of Isabela City and Lamitan City, in the Ecclesiastical province of Zamboanga. It has a population of about 400,000, about 30 percent of them are Catholics.
