Imus all set for Flag Day celebration

By Anthony Giron IMUS, Cavite -- Close to 2,900 Philippines adorn the city’s main roads in preparation for the 121st National Flag Day celebration on May 28. Imus is the virtual center of the Flag Day celebration because it was in the Battle of Alapan where the Philippine tricolor was first waved by the revolutionaries under General Emilio F. Aguinaldo on May 28, 1898. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) said the two-week celebration ends on June 12, Independence Day. The flags were put up along Aguinaldo Highway, Nueno Avenue, a street leading to the city plaza; Alapan and other main roads. Imus is the “Flag Capital of the Philippines.” The Flag Day and the local month-long Wagayway Festival or Flag Wave Festivities in the city are being done with pomp, prominence and colorful activities. Kicking off the celebration on May 27 is the 7 a.m. Mass at the Imus Cathedral, and the afternoon parade of the giant flag and float of "Inang Laya," (Mother Freedom). The May 28 program includes the traditional flag-raising and wreath-laying at the Shrine of Mother Freedom in Heritage Park. The “Battle of Alapan” was the first victory for Aguinaldo and the revolutionaries over the Spanish force after his return to the Philippines from exile in Hong Kong. The flag, designed by Aguinaldo himself, was sewn in Hong Kong by Marcela Agoncillo, her daughter Lorenza, and Delfina Herbosa de Natividad, a niece of Dr. Jose P. Rizal.
