Heat index of 43°C scorches Davao City

DAVAO CITY - The Philippines Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) recorded this city’s highest temperature this month at 35.4 degrees Celsius, with a heat index of 43 degrees Celsius.

Pagasa-Davao weather observer Jojo Tabaclaon told The Manila Bulletin that, so far, the 35.4 degrees Celsius on May 19 was the hottest temperature registered since the summer season began. It likewise noted that the 43-degree Celsius heat index was most scorching.
Heat index is the degree of human discomfort that gives the apparent temperature or what people can feel following a temperature. In a five-day forecast of the bureau, a 31.2 to 41.1 degrees Celsius heat index is still expected from May 20 to 24.
Tabaclaon said the bureau recorded the hottest temperature for April at 35.3 degrees Celsius. She added that a normal temperature was at 32 to 34 degrees Celsius, and that the scorching heat of the sun this summer was also because of the El Niño.
“Kung makasinati man ta ug medyo masalub-on na panahon nga nay pag-ulan (If the weather is partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshower) that is because of the localized thunderstorm,” Tabaclaon said.
Pagasa-Davao urged the people to be cautious of possible heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and heat cramps. According to the bureau, if the heat index reached in between 41 to 54 degrees Celsius, one could be in danger of heat-related illnesses.
Tabaclaon also advised the public to refrain from staying long hours under the heat of the sun from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
She said it was best to wear light-colored and comfortable clothes for sun protection, keep hydrated, and have an umbrella whether it will rain or not.
