Toby Tiangco is set to replace the seat of his brother and outgoing third-termer Mayor John Rey Tiangco after the city board of canvassers has proclaimed him as Navotas City mayor.
Tiangco has garnered 78,778 votes from 160 out of 161 clustered precincts. His opponent, D.I. Ang, has garnered 33,216 votes.
His proclamation was supposed to start at 6 p.m., but his and other candidates’ supporters waited up until 8:30 p.m. as they arrived late.
In an interview with reporters after his proclamation, Toby, who had already served three terms as Navotas mayor from 2000 to 2010, said that he sought a comeback because he wants to continue what he and his brother have started.
“Ipagpapatuloy ko yung project nya in health, yung hospital expansion. Pati na rin yung livelihood projects nya (I will continue his health projects, the hospital expansion. Even his livelihood projects),” he said.
“It’s humbling experience to become a mayor again. So I need to return what they have given through offering them a good public service,” he added.
Asked why he thinks majority of Navotas voters chose him to become a city mayor again, he said: “Performance ang inooffer ko. ‘Yun naman sabi ko sa mga tao, kung nagustuhan nyo yung proyekto namin, tulungan nyo ko (Because I offer performance. That’s what I always told them, if they are satisfied with our projects, then help us .”
Toby’s proclaimed vice mayor is Clint Geronimo, his running mate, who has garnered at least 62,640 votes—a close 57.22% of the total votes.
