Feast of San Isidro Labrador

By Christina Hermoso Bishop Jesus Cabrera will celebrate a high mass at 6:30 p.m. on May 15, Wednesday, at the San Isidro Parish on Taft Avenue, Pasay City, in solemn observance of the Feast of San Isidro Labrador, the revered patron saint of farmers, peasants, agricultural workers, and of Madrid, Spain. Novena masses were held from May 6 to 14. More than 150 parishes and several municipalities across the country will hold commemorative masses and feast rites in honor of the well-loved Spanish saint, who is also known as Saint Isidore the Farmer. Festivities in honor of San Isidro will be held in Pulilan, Bulacan and Angono, Rizal, where the Carabao Festival, which features kneeling carabaos in front of the church, has become a much awaited spectacle. In Quezon Province, Lucban’s colorful “Pahiyas” Festival, Sariaya’s “Agawan” Festival, and the “Mayohan” sa Tayabas will be celebrated. The “Kangga” Festival will be held in Mogpog, Marinduque, while the “Bariw” Festival will be held in Nabas, Aklan. Rites will also be held in Liliw and Luisiana, Laguna and in Talavera, Nueva Ecija. Born in Madrid, Spain, San Isidro was a deeply religious and hardworking farmer who put God at the center of his life. Many miracles were attributed to his intercession. He died in the year 1130. His wife, Santa Maria de la Cabeza, is also well-venerated in Spain to this day. (Christina I. Hermoso)
