Remulla, the Nacionalista Party (NP) bet, was leading Maliksi of the Liberal Party by 327,805 votes, based on the unofficial tally of the Commission on Elections'(Comelec) transparency server as of 4:20 a.m. Tuesday.
Remulla had 820,890 votes to Maliksi’s 493,085. Two other candidates, Roberto Borral and Gerbie Fenequito Ber Ado, were far behind in third and fourth places, respectively.
The 50-year-old Remulla became governor for two consecutive terms, in 2010 and 2013, while Maliksi, 81, was governor for three terms starting in 2001. Both hail from Imus City, the province's capital.
Remulla gave way to Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla, his elder brother, in his third gubernatorial bid in 2016, citing studies and other concerns.
The Remullas are sons of the late Johnny Remulla, who reigned as governor for 15 years. The Remulla patriarch, the so-called "Father of Modern Cavite," was the province’s longest-serving governor.
Last Monday’s elections between Remulla and Maliksi was deemed as the "poll fight of Cavite's political giants." Incumbent Vice Governor Ramon Jolo Revilla (National People's Coalition), Jonvic Remulla's running mate, ran unopposed.
Gov. Boying Remulla (NPC) is also leading by a wide margin against his rival, Gen-Gen Arayata, in Cavite's 6th District congressional race, based on Comelec's unofficial tally.
Boying gave way for Jonvic when he decided to run for governor before the filing of candidacy certificates in October last year.
