Higher employment rate in Western Visayas

(Tara Yap/MANILA BULLETIN) Cyril Ticao, Western Visayas regional director of Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), said regional employment is 96.1 percent, based on the January 2019 Labor Force Survey. In comparison, the employment rate for both Central Visayas and Eastern Visayas is 94.8 percent, according to Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data, Western Visayas posted a high employment rate despite the six-month closure of Boracay Island in Aklan last year. In fact, Western Visayas’ employment rate is higher than the national average of 94.8 percent, Ticao said. The Labor Force Survey also found that the 3.9-percent unemployment rate in the region comprising of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental is the lowest in the Visayas. In comparison, Central Visayas and Eastern Visayas posted 5.2-percent unemployment. Western Visayas’ underemployment rate is also the lowest at 16.8 percent. In comparison, Central Visayas’ rate was 18.4-percent and Eastern Visayas, 24.5 percent unemployment. Meanwhile, at least 27,000 vacancies were available at DOLE’s Labor Day Job Fair in Iloilo City. That is composed of 22,000 vacancies for overseas employment and 5,000 for domestic employment.
