(FEDERICO CRUZ / MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) Police Major General Guillermo Eleazar, regional director of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), said policemen should also take part in the upcoming polls as the vote of every Filipino would help shape the future of the country. "While it is true that the PNP serves and protects our countrymen so they may peacefully exercise their right to vote, most of our policemen disregard their own rights to suffrage," Eleazar bared. "It is the very reason that I would like to encourage all policemen, especially those who come from their hometowns in the provinces, that every vote counts and your votes are equally significant," he noted. According to Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution No. 10443, Section 2, members of the PNP are entitled to avail of the absentee voting provided they are duly registered voters and temporarily assigned in places where they are not registered, in the course of undertaking their public functions and duties. According to the Metro Manila police chief, the Comelec has scheduled on April 29, 30 and May 1 for the police assigned at the NCRPO and Camp Crame General Headquarters to be able to vote avail at the Camp Crame Multipurpose Hall, Quezon City; Malabon City Police Station; Eastern Police District Headquarters on Caruncho Avenue, Pasig City; Pateros Municipal Hall; Quezon City Police District Headquarters; and Regional Mobile Force Battalion Multipurpose Hall at Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City. Eleazar said the police should take advantage of the absentee voting "in order to maximize the deployment of police force and utilize all its resources in securing peace and order" on the date of the polls. "Our country deserves good leaders and we will be able to attain this by exercising our right to suffrage wisely," Eleazar emphasized. Meanwhile, he stated that the NCRPO "is all set" to ensure a peaceful and orderly midyear elections. "The public can expect that our policemen will continue to implement the Comelec's gun ban policy, maintain the frequency of checkpoints in the metropolis to help deter criminal minds in executing their evil designs and maintain a non-partisan position in handling political cases," Eleazar said. Earlier, Police Colonel Bernard Banac, PNP spokesperson, said that around 143,000 cops will be deployed nationwide to ensure public safety on the day of the elections. Of the number, some 15,000 cops will be fielded in the National Capital Region, Eleazar said.
