A police officer and two drug suspects were killed, while another policeman was wounded, in a buy-bust operation that turned deadly in Antipolo City Tuesday.
Killed were Patrolman Ariel Dapyawen, a member of the Intelligence unit of the Antipolo police, and brothers Ranie and Celeste Lajote, whom police said were part of the notorious Lego gun-for-hire and robbery group operating in Rizal province.
Police General Oscar Albayalde was set to visit the wake of Dapyawen late Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Dapyawen's companion identified as P/Staff Sargeant Joseph Monjardin was hurt in the operation.
Initial investigation showed elements of Antipolo City Police conducted a drug sting against the Lajote brothers at Sitio Sagipin, Brgy. Dela Paz, Antipolo City.
Police said the suspects suddenly ran away when they sensed that Dapyawen and Monjardin, whom they were transacting with, were actually undercover cops.
Police said the suspects entered a nearby residential unit believed to be their hideout, pulled out their guns and started firing at the pursuing lawmen.
Unfortunately, Dapyawen was hit in the body multiple times, while Monjardin was hit in the stomach once.
Dapyawen was rushed to the Antipolo City District Hospital where he expired while being treated.
Meanwhile, Monjardin was brought to Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center and is now in stable condition.
Backup police officers pursued the fleeing suspects until they were able to shoot dead Celeste at Sitio Sagipin.
On the other hand, Ranie was cornered by authorities at Sitio Mapayapa where he was gunned down.
Police Brigadier General Edward Carranza, regional director of the Calabarzon Police Regional Office (PRO-4A), mourned the loss of Dapyawen.
"We are in deep grief by the loss of one of our men. We assure the families left by Pat. Dapwayen of assistance and support and all the benefits due to them and so with the other injured PSSG. Monjardin," Carranza said.
The Medalya ng Kadakilaan (Posthumous) was bestowed to Dapyawen "for his acts of heroism in the performance of duty" while Monjardin received the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting "for his courageous deeds."
The Calabarzon top cop also revealed that Ranie had two murder cases filed against him in Antipolo City Police Station.
Ranie was tagged by the police in the killing of a certain Ban Hallen Gabanes at Sitio Saguipin, Brgy. Dela Paz on February 18, 2019; and Cary Banzuela just last Black Saturday, April 20.
