IBAAN, Batangas – What was supposed to be a blissful summer vacation turned into tragedy when five persons, including a couple, died while 14 other relatives were injured when the jeepney they were riding hit a cement barrier near a spillway here, Saturday morning.
(Batangas Police / MANILA BULLETIN)
Patrolman Anthony Penid of Ibaan Police identified the fatalities as couple Philip and Bernadette Cule; passengers Nelia Braza and Monica Paragas; and driver, Wilfredo Macabudbod. They were all from Calamba, Laguna.
They were declared dead-on-arrival at the Batangas Medical Center in Batangas City.
Penid said 14 other passengers, including six minors, were brought to different hospitals in Calamba, Laguna, Lipa City and Batangas City for treatment. Three of them were still in critical condition.
Report said the victims were on board a rented jeepney driven by Macabudbod, and were bound for Lobo, Batangas when the vehicle passed a steep downhill portion of the road at around 11:45 a.m.
Macabudbod apparently lost control of the jeepney that sped downhill and slammed into the concrete barrier.
Investigators said the jeepney had twice broken down but the passengers still insisted on taking the trip.
The victims’ remains were already claimed by their relatives, police said.
