DAVAO CITY – The influential Floirendo-Del Rosario political clan in Davao del Norte will be rooting for the senatorial bid of Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos after all.
Davao del Norte 2nd District Representative Antonio Floirendo Jr. (ROBINSON NIÑAL JR./
Davao del Norte Rep. Antonio “Tonyboy” Floirendo made this assurance a day after poking fun at the Hugpong ng Pagbabago senatorial bet whom he jokingly accused of making him cough up campaign funds to back her Senate bid.
Floirendo sent a dozen “I love you” text messages to Marcos after realizing that his joshing was recorded by reporters who interviewed him at the sidelines of the HNP rally that he and cousin, Gov. Anthony Del Rosario hosted in Digos City on Monday.
“I hope my peace offering of “I love you” messages will be enough for her to forgive me. I said it in jest but the media took everything seriously,” Floirendo said.
During the interview, Floirendo was asked if he could deliver a sweep for HNP senatorial candidates that included Marcos.
The scion of the banana plantation magnate said that might not be possible, apparently noting that there are 13 bets being endorsed by the regional party chaired by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.
When asked if Marcos would be among those who would get his backing, Floirendo, in apparent jest, said: “Sana. Kaso gusto niya akong gumastos eh. Huwag na. Dami-daming hidden wealth niyan.” (I hope so. But she wants me to shell out money. I will not. They have so many hidden wealth.)
The veteran administration solon was teasing the lady governor of having imbibed the known Ilocano character of being “kuripot” or frugal.
Floirendo said he never meant to insult Marcos, noting that he and her brother, former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. are friends.
Asked again who among the 13 HNP senatorial bets will be dropped from the list he and Del Rosario will support, Floirendo hinted that it would be reelectionist Sen. Aquilino “Koko”
Pimentel III.
“Is Koko Pimentel a member of the HNP team?” Floirendo answered in glaring sarcasm.
It will be recalled that it was Pimentel, PDP-Laban president, who expelled Floirendo from the ruling political party, apparently on the recommendation of former Speaker and Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez.
Floirendo was instrumental in helping Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and provincial officials of Davao region organize the HNP. The two were also believed to have masterminded the ouster of Alvarez as speaker.
