What started as an email to Leica testing the waters about a partnership has resulted to Huawei having a strong ally against other major mobile phone brands. Following a monumental meeting at Leica HQ in 2014, Huawei and the global camera brand have carved a path for the smartest camera phones. Huawei and Leica have formed a research team made out of experts from both sides. The main task was to focus on optical design and image quality. During the primary collaborative research, Huawei experts found that Leica pursued a higher testing standard on image quality. The systematic quality check covers multiple dimensions including colour, focus, texture, noise, distortion movement, etc. Huawei set up a dedicated team to testing the photo in more than 100 scenarios to match the stringent standard. To achieve the “Leica effect”, Huawei R&D team worked hard to track the reported issues and solved the problems, making one improvement at a time. Subsequently, there were substantial improvements and upgrades in each generation of Leica lenses. Leica expert has a very high standard when it comes to the ghosting effect and flare index. Leica insisted on testing the lens of the smartphone with their camera standard because it serves as the basis of excellent image quality. Huawei and Leica not only work together to reach a technological breakthrough in bringing the tech features of higher-function cameras to smartphone photography. The collaboration also elevates the sophistication of smartphone photography, making smartphone camera a tool of artistic self-expression and a way for people to share their lives through the act of reimagining the world.
