Cardinal Tagle expresses solidarity, offers prayers for victims in NZ shooting

(Jansen Romero / MANILA BULLETIN) "We unite ourselves with our brothers and sisters in New Zealand, our brother and sister praying in the mosque, who were attacked at the moment of prayer," church run Radyo Veritas quoted Tagle. "Some of them now the survivors asking, how could this happen?" he added. The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) also condemned the attacks on Muslims in New Zealand. "With this terrorist attacks at Christchurch, we are once again reminded of the intertwined and deadly nature of prejudice and extremism, how it seeks to destroy and sow enmity among peace-loving people and communities," Bp. Efraim Tendero, Secretary General and CEO of the WEA , said in a statement. "As followers of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, we condemn such violence and state in the clearest terms that there is no justification whatsoever to commit such a heinous crime against people of any faith or no faith," he added. Earlier, Pope Francis also offered prayers for the victims of the mass shooting. "I pray for the dead and injured and their families. I am close to our Muslim brothers and all that community. I renew my invitation for prayer and gesture of peace to combat hatred and violence," he said. On Friday, some 50 people were killed when a lone gunman opened fire on worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Majority of the victims were found to be Muslim migrants or refugees from countries such as Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
