TD Chedeng enters PAR

By Ellalyn de Vera Ruiz The tropical depression monitored off the Pacific Ocean has entered the Philippine area of responsibility on Sunday, and has been named as “Chedeng.” In a very rare weather phenomenon contrasting to the current El Nino being experienced in the country, tropical depression “Chedeng” has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility located east of Mindanao Sunday, March 17, 2019, in which it may make landfall over the eastern coast of Davao Oriental between Monday evening and Tuesday morning bringing with it scattered to strong rains. (ALVIN KASIBAN / MANILA BULLETIN) The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Chedeng, with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 60 kph, was located at 840 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur around 4 p.m. Sunday. Should it continue to move west at 25 kilometers per hour, Chedeng may make landfall over Davao Oriental between Monday and Tuesday. Scattered to at times widespread moderate to heavy rains may prevail over Davao Oriental and Surigao del Sur on Monday and in other parts of Mindanao on Tuesday PAGASA advised the concerned disaster risk reduction and management offices and residents in these areas, especially those living in areas at high risk of flooding and landslides, to undertake necessary preparations and continue monitoring official updates. The weather disturbance will cause moderate to rough seas over the eastern seaboard of Visayas and Mindanao on Monday and Tuesday. Those with small seacraft were advised not to venture out into sea. While it may make landfall over Davao Oriental, PAGASA was not discounting the possibility that Chedeng will weaken into a low pressure area before reaching the land. Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon or amihan will bring cloudy skies with light rains over Batanes, Cagayan, and Isabela. Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms. Residents in these areas were warned of possible flash floods during severe thunderstorms.
