By Ellalyn De Vera-Ruiz The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded three volcanic earthquakes and four rockfall events during the 24-hour observation of the Mayon Volcano in Albay. Three of the earthquakes were related to phreatic eruption events that occurred at 3:10 p.m., 3:18 p.m., and 3:34 p.m. last Tuesday. Mayon Volcano spewed grayish ash plumes around 8:40 a.m. on December 27, 2018. (FILE SCREENSHOT FROM MB VIDEO / NIÑO LUCES / MANILA BULLETIN) Phivolcs said these events generated light brown to grayish ash plume that rose 500 meters, 1,000 meters, and 500 meters above the summit, respectively, before drifting southwest. Weak to moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes was observed creeping downslope around early morning to early afternoon, but was observed to rise up to 250 meters above the summit before drifting south-southwest, west-southwest and southwest in the afternoon, it added. Likewise, crater glow from the summit could be observed at night. Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 2, which means “a moderate level of unrest.” The active volcano has been under Alert Level 2 since March 29 last year. Phivolcs continues to warn the public that “sudden explosions, lava collapses, pyroclastic density currents or PDCs, and ashfall can still occur and threaten areas in the upper to middle slopes of Mayon.” It also reminded the public to avoid entry into the six-kilometer permanent danger zone and seven kilometer extended danger zone stretching from Anoling, Camalig, to Sta. Misericordia, Sto. Domingo due to perennial hazards of rockfalls, avalanche, ash puffs and sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions. Likewise, people living in valleys and active river channels were advised to remain vigilant against sediment-laden streamflows and lahars in the event of prolonged and heavy rainfall.
