CAMP OLA, Albay – A man who held hostage the family of his niece was killed by police in Masbate early morning Sunday.

Chief Inspector Malu Calubaquib, Police Regional Office 5 spokesperson, said Magdaleno Bustamante held at knifepoint Rovelyn Uy, a 28-year-old teacher and her son, Christ Jerome, 3, in their house in Barangay Poblacion 2, Mobo town.

Christ Jerome died later in the hospital while being treated for a knife wound.

Police said that around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Bustamante, who was armed with a knife, burst into the room of Rovelyn and son and threatened to kill them.

Calubaquib said a SWAT team from the 1st Police Mobile Force Company (PMFC) responded to the incident, and negotiated with Bustamante to release his hostages.

Bustamante wanted members of media to be present and demanded firearms, Calubaquib said.

During the course of negotiation, Bustamante suddenly stabbed Christ Jerome, prompting to the SWAT team to move in and shoot Bustamante, killing him instantly.
