With lack of money to fund its machinery and low survey rankings, Vice President Leni Robredo is counting on volunteers and other sectors that may give the “Otso Diretso” senatorial slate the crucial boost for the campaign.

“Malaking bahagi ng kampanya iyong mga volunteers, kasi lumalabas, mas desididong magtrabaho.” she said on the sidelines of the Ahon Laylayan Koalisyon assembly held Thursday in Cebu.
(Volunteers have a big role in the campaign because it appears, they are ones who are more decided to work.)
“Alam namin na mahirap, alam namin na dahil walang resources. Iyong pag-mobilize ng tao, mahirap iyon. Pero tingin ko, kahit mahirap iyon, nako-compensate siya ng passion ng mga volunteers na hindi na umiinda ng oras saka ng pagod,” Robredo stressed.
(We know it’s hard because we lack resources. The mobilization of people is difficult. But I think, even that’s hard, it’s compensated by the passion of volunteers who don’t mind the time and work.)
In her speech at the event, the Vice President rallied support for the Otso Diretso slate from the leaders and members of various sectors that formed the coalition.
The Ahon Laylayan coalition is composed of organizations of women, youth, indigenous peoples, senior citizens, fisher folk, farmers, and other marginalized sectors of society.
The Vice President recognized the need to step up efforts to introduce to Filipino voters the opposition senatorial bets, most of whom are lagging behind pre-election surveys.
“Kaya iyong sa akin lang, kapag naipakilala namin iyong aming mga kandidato nang maayos, alam namin na tutulungan sila. Kaya iyong effort talaga na ine-exert namin ngayon, maipakilala iyong mga kandidato,” she said.
(For me, once we introduce our candidates well, the people would help them. That’s why we are exerting efforts now to introduce our candidates.)
True enough, seven of the Otso Diretso candidates went house-to-house to gain voters’ support during their campaign sortie in Cebu.
Marawi civic leader Samira Gutoc, Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano, lawyers Erin Tañada, Chel Diokno, Florin Hilbay and Romy Macalintal campaigned by knocking on the doors of residents in Barangay Luz.
Reelectionist Senator Bam Aquino did the same on his own in other areas while former Interior secretary Mar Roxas skipped their Cebu sortie.
Of this eight, only Aquino and Roxas have so far made it to the so-called Magic 12 in pre-election surveys.
