Gordon wants law enforcement to go after motorcycle-riding criminals

(CZAR DANCEL / MANILA BULLETIN) Gordon, chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon and Justice and Human Rights committees, made the call after he strongly condemned the killing of 63-year old businessman Jose Luis Yulo and his driver, Allan Santos, by motorcycle-riding gunmen. The two were gunned down along EDSA in Mandaluyong City last Sunday afternoon. “Criminals on board motorcycles have really become so bold and fearless. They kill with impunity in broad daylight and even along a very busy thoroughfare such as EDSA! It is high time that we take a bite out of these crimes committed with impunity by riding-in-tandems,” he said. Yulo is a kin and namesake of Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine Islands President Jose Luis U. Yulo Jr. Two motorcycle-riding gunmen pulled beside their van and opened fire killing Yulo and Santos. A woman, identified as Esmeralda Ignacio, 39, who was also travelling with them in the van, was also injured. Gordon noted that they are but the latest victims in a series of killings over the years where business people, politicians, newsmen, activists and ordinary citizens were felled by bullets with seeming ease and impunity. Based on records from the Philippine National Police (PNP), an average of four people is killed each day by riding-in-tandem shooters. Of the total of 28,409 motorcycle riding crimes or incidents reported from 2010 to 2017, 13,062 or 46% of which were shooting incidents. The same records showed that out of over 4,000 motorcycle riding crimes or incidents in 2016, only eight cases (0.18 percent) were solved.
