A dry run for the opening of the NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10 will be conducted Wednesday as the elevated expressway is scheduled to open in a few days.
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar together with Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Art Tugade led the inspection of the NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10 which covers 5.58 kilometers of a six-lane road from McArthur Highway to Valenzuela City to Circumferential Road 3 (C-3) in Caloocan City and a 2.6 kilometer four-lane elevated road from C-3 to R-10 in Navotas City which will be completed this 2018.
Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar, together with Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) officials led by President Rodrigo Franco and NLEX Corporation President Luigi Bautista are expected to spearhead the dry run on the expressway from Karuhatan, Valenzuela City to the new Caloocan Interchange in C3 Road, Caloocan City.
Villar announced Tuesday that the opening of the road, which was initially scheduled to open last month, will finally be opened to motorists “in a few days.”
NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10, an 8.25-kilometer elevated expressway from Valenzuela to C3 Road, is envisioned to decongest traffic in Metro Manila as it will serve as an alternate corridor for motorists traveling from Central and North Luzon provinces, Valenzuela City, and Quezon City to Manila.
It will greatly cater to trucks from Port Area in Manila to the North Luzon Expressway and will take about 30,000 vehicles away from congested roads in Manila.
“The NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10 will be a traffic game changer since this will drastically cut travel time from port area to NLEX,” Villar said.
Villar also noted the change on travel time will translate into billions of pesos of cost savings per year.
“In a recent JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) study, traffic congestion in Metro Manila is costing the country P3.5 billion a day. This new road will be a big boost to our economy as billions of pesos will be saved annually with the improved travel time,” Villar stressed.
Truckers and freight forwarders are expected to greatly benefit from the elevated expressway since their cargo trucks will be spared from the truck ban thus translate to faster delivery of goods to and from the provinces, the secretary added.
NLEX Corporation President and General Manager Luigi Bautista, on the other hand, said that “aside from connecting NLEX to key areas in Metro Manila, the NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10 is seen to bring more opportunities in nearby communities such as generation of employment and increase in land values.”
