Police identified the fatality as Fernando Paguinto, an employee of Yokohama Philippines Clark and a backrider of a black motorcycle driven by one John Hervin Casas, who was critically injured and rushed to Angeles University Foundation Medical Center for treatment.
Initial investigation showed Paguinto and Casas were traversing McArthur Highway in Barangay San Jose around 3:50 a.m. when the suspects onboard a white Honda Hatchback with plate number TJG 125, a white Honda Sedan with black hood and plate number CPS 203, and another black car with plate number UFE 711 hit them in a blur.
Angeles City Vice Mayor Edu Pamintuan posted in his social media account multiple footages from closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras that captured the incident.
In one CCTV video, a number of cars were seen seemingly racing against each other until one of them, the Honda Hatchback, suddenly slowed down. The next frame showed a motorcycle crashing and the riders being thrown off..
All the cars just drove past the victims, as if nothing happened, and made good their escape.
Chief Superintendent Roberto Fajardo, director of the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG), said they are willing to help the local police to investigate the matter if they would ask for assistance.
"Trabaho ng local police kasi 'yan. Ang sa amin carnapping, highway robbery at carjacking. Sila dapat ang magka-come up with the findings kung talagang illegal drag racing nga so kami, kapag humingi sila ng tulong, ready to support kami," Fajardo said in a phone interview.
The victims were initially brought to Rafael Lazatin Memorial Medical Center but Paguinto eventually died while undergoing treatment due to traumatic injuries, police said.
In his social media post, Pamintuan revealed that two of the drivers already surrendered to authorities and gave details about their identities.
However, the identities of the drivers have yet to be made public. This reporter already contacted Pamintuan for an interview but he has yet to respond.
Meanwhile, Pamintuan urged the third driver involved in the incident to surrender.
"You cannot escape the eye in the sky! You better surrender... We know all the plates. Better surrender. You are already reported to the TMG ," he said.
A case for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, serious physical injury and damage to property was prepared against the suspects.
Local police have coordinated with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to determine the identity of the third driver. (Martin A. Sadongdong)
