LUCENA CITY, Quezon – Quezon remains the biggest agricultural producer in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) in terms of implemented farm programs, a Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) survey revealed.
The figures were reported by Quezon agriculture chief and concurrent provincial administrator Roberto Gajo.
The province has a 42 percent share in the region’s palay production, 75 percent in corn production, 26 percent in fruits, 86 percent in coconuts and 62 percent in vegetables, the survey noted.
Gajo credited Gov. David Suarez for boosting the income not only of farmers and fisherfolk but also their cooperatives and associations.
The governor has instituted programs for alternative livelihood and enterprise support services to farmers and the agricultural workers, in partnership with the city and municipal agricultural offices and the Department of Agriculture and Philippine Coconut Authority.
Of particular interest is the processing and production of virgin coconut oil, coconut sap sugar, coconut wine, and copra besides its other byproducts.
Gajo said the provincial government has also established the Quezon herbal pavilion at the Quezon National Park in Atimonan town.
There is also crop insurance for farmers, fisherfolk and the agricultural sector to help them recover from calamities and other emergencies.
