TACLOBAN CITY - In line with National Arts Month, award-winning artist Dante Enage has launched his ninth solo exhibit that he had dedicated to his only daughter.
The exhibit is entitled Hiyum, the Waray word for smile. It is also a contraction of Enage’s daughter’s name, Hiraya Yumi.
Over 40 paintings on round canvasses displaying bright and bold colors of youth, of hope, and belongingness will be showcased at Robinsons Place Tacloban.
“Each artwork is painstakingly done, a replica of the wonder and innocence of a child. With a plethora of elements of life in each piece – butterflies and flowers; rich diverse flora and fauna, cartoon character silhouettes, and glowing rays of light and viscous bio-gunk, that wrap around the subject, revealing the main attraction: the youthful and mysterious smile,” Enage said.
Hiyum reveals his love for the environment and nature, his advocacy for culture in the hidden Baybayin texts, and his love for his daughter that reflects in each of the smiles displayed on every canvass.
He said: “Hiyum reminds me of a few lines in the Eraserheads’ song ‘With a smile’ that says: ‘In a world where everybody,/Hates a happy ending story./It’s a wonder love can make the world go round.’”
Enage is a Sangyaw Awardee for visual arts 2017. He is the founder of Kolor han Biswal Arte nga Waraynon) Kolor Banwa, which aims to promote local art through his art workshop all over Eastern Visayas.
