By Jan Carlo Anolin It has been more than a month since Catriona Gray was crowned Miss Universe 2019, but netizens still cannot get enough of the “lava walk” that she made famous. Marc Loria Brua posted Friday his artwork which gained praises from netizens. As of this posting, Brua’s post had 3, 700 shares and 8, 300 likes. After Gray won the pageant, Brua said he thought of thinking of a design for his illustration to portray the Miss Universe since there were numerous artworks he saw on the internet after the coronation. After witnessing the evening gown competition, Catriona’s lava gown caught Brua’s attention and used it as his inspiration for his artwork. “Since it was ‘lava’ gown, I was thinking of fire as an alternative. Unfortunately, hindi pwede magsiga sa bahay at baka masunog pa bahay namin,” the 19-year-old told the Manila Bulletin. His inspiration came after seeing the candle boxes during a novena mass at the Sto. Niño Church (Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño). He went back to the same church during Sinulog Festival and took a photo of his cut-out gown illustration placed over the lighted candles. Brua started doing this certain art style after being inspired by his idol, Armenian illustrator Edgar Artis. Artis is known for using stylized paper cut-outs and completing it by taking a photo with different objects or the surroundings, the same way how Brua used the lighted candles for the lava gown. "a-shock po ako at nakakaiyak kasi hindi ko po akalain na mag-va-viral. At nakakataba ng puso kasi nakakatanggap po ako nang mga positive comments from them (netizens)," Brua, a 4th year Physical Science (BSEd) student of Cebu Normal University said. The Lapu-Lapu native thanked Gray for inspiring and for showcasing the world-class talents of Filipinos.
