Uncle faces murder charges for 12-year-old girl's killing
The uncle of the 12-year-old girl who was found dead with her throat slit in Caloocan City on Thursday will be facing murder charges after he was found to be the one behind the killing.
Senior Superintendent Restituto Arcangel, Caloocan City Police chief, identified the suspect as Reynaldo Urbano, 43, jeepney driver. Urbano is the brother of the victim's mother.
Arcangel said they are eyeing rape as the suspect's motive for killing Mhyrraquel Singson.
Singson was found dead with her throat slit by their house helper at about 3 p.m. on Thursday. The victim also had a wound on her left side where the suspect may have pointed a kitchen knife, Arcangel said.
"Sinabi ko sakanya, 'ginanon mo 'yung bata kasi gusto mong rape-in, 'di ba?' Hindi siya umimik (I asked him, 'you did that to the kid because you wanted to rape her, right?' He did not reply)," he said.
Arcangel said they still do not have direct evidence against Urbano, but there is a big chance that he did the crime.
"Sa circumstancial evidence na meron kami sakanya, malaki talaga ang probability na siya ang gumawa (With the circumstantial evidence that we have, there is a big probability that he is the one who did the crime)," he said.
He said Urbano confessed to killing Singson during interrogation because of his "extreme anger" for her father. However, the police cannot use this as evidence since the suspect gives out "inconsistent" statements.
In a previous interview with PCP Commander Harold Melgar, he said the suspect only took a bath at Singson's house and left at about 2:30 p.m.
But during interrogation, Urbano said he took a bath after he did the crime to wash off the victim's blood, Arcangel said.
Arcangel also said that the house helper saw Urbano open the house with Singson's keys. Urbano reportedly said that the door was unlocked. She then saw Urbano leave the keys by the sofa.
"Ang tanong, baket nasa kanya 'yung susi nung bata? (The question is, why does he have the child's key?)" he said. "And why did he leave the keys by the sofa? To make it appear as if the door was open the whole time. To make it appear that other people entered the house. "
Urbano also confessed to using drugs "from time to time," Arcangel bared.
He added that the two cell phones that were reported missing from the house may have been taken by Urbano "purposely to mislead investigators."
The Northern Police District Scene of the Crime Operatives (NPD-SOCO) lifted some fingerprints from the crime scene. The results will be released after 10-15 days, Arcangel said.
The suspect is now being held at the Caloocan City Jail. (Minka Klaudia Tiangco)
