The former Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) chief of Philippine National Police (PNP) honored the heroism of the 44 troopers from the PNP Special Action Force (SAF) who died during the Mamasapano clash.
On Friday, Retired Police Director Benjamin Magalong posted on Facebook his recognition to the SAF 44 soldiers who bravely fought and sacrificed their lives in the anti-terrorism operation, codenamed Oplan Exodus, in Maguindanao last Jan. 25, 2015.
“For us here in Baguio, and throughout the Cordillera region, the day grimly reminds us that 15 of our best-trained warriors gave up their lives in the service of our people. We were one in community with their families in remembering the ultimate sacrifice for democracy and freedom to flourish, regardless of cost,” Magalong said.
Magalong was also the former PNP Board of Inquiry chairman who was tasked to probe the incident.
“I share national grief over the unnecessary loss of life, not just of the SAF 44, but of innocent civilians who perished from that tragic incident,” the former chairman added.
Magalong recalled that the Board of Inquiry released a credible report “regardless of dire consequences to career and ambition, but simply for the nation” for the death of the SAF 44 to be not in vain, and for their families to achieve justice.
The former Cordillera regional director also reminded the public servants “never allow erring policy decisions that uselessly make our policemen serve as the sacrificial lambs at the needless expense of their ‘life.’”
“Let us remember their selfless sacrifice precisely for us to continue pursuing the ends of truth and justice in every public endeavor we serve. Anything less than that will diminish the national esteem we hold for our fallen, but not forgotten SAF 44,” Magalong said.
Magalong, a Baguio native, graduated from the Philippine Military Academy in 1982 and was also an ex-SAF trooper. He founded the SAF Seaborne and Sniper unit.
Aside from the SAF 44, at least five civilians and some members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels died during the bloody clash in Mamasapano.
The operation also led to the death of one of FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists, Zulkifli Abdhir alias Marwan.
On Feb. 27, 2017, President Duterte declared January 25 of every year as the day of national remembrance for the heroism of the SAF 44.
