Thai director Witthaya Thongyooyong has a realistic take on the highs and lows of sibling relationship in “Brother Of The Year."

“Siblings have an unbreakable bond that only they can feel,” he said through a translator in an interview held in Ortigas recently. “In Thai culture, we don’t usually show our love to our siblings but we know that we love each other. Sibling relationship is very unique because you cannot simply cut them off from your life. Also you cannot choose who will be your sister, you just love her whoever and whatever she is. I guess that makes this film very understandable especially that family is very important in Asian culture.”
"Brother Of The Year" is about a man who has to learn how to take care of himself when his sister gets married and moves out. The movie is produced by GDH 559, the same outfit behind the internationally-acclaimed highschool heist thriller film “Bad Genius.”
Witthaya got excited upon learning he got the job.
He shared, “This film made me reminisce about my family, especially when I interfered in my younger ones’ love life. I believe that many other siblings experience something like this too.”
Playing the lead roles are Thai actors Sunny Suwanmethanont and Urassaya“Yaya” Sperbund. Joining them is Nichkhun Horvejkul of Korean boy band 2PM.
Sunny plays Chut, the brother of Jane (Yaya). The conflict begins when she acts more like a mother than a sister while he likes to make himself a burden.
“Stories about siblings are easily relatable to me and many others. I believe that most of us would hardly express our love to our siblings. Imagine, it’s quite embarrassing to walk to your siblings and say ‘I love you, brother!’ 'I love you, sister!.’Even though we do not express it out loud, deep down inside, we know that we love one another,” was how Sunny put it.
“I guess the best part of filming this movie is having a sister on screen. I promise that this one will make audience cry but of course for a good reason,” he added.
Despite the difference in line of work--- Sunny as a film actor, Urassaya as a TV actress, and Nichkhun as a singer---all said attending a workshop together and telling each other stories about their real-life sibling situation created a bond among themselves.
Nichkhun shared “‘Brother Of The Year’ will not only entertain the audience, but it will also make them think and care more about their siblings. No matter how mad we are at them, we can’t stop being siblings. Ultimately, we still love and care for one another.”
Vithaya is confident the film will have a successful run in the Philippines.
“I think if it became successful in Thailand then it will also be successful in other countries because we are all Asians, in some ways we have similar cultures,” he said. “Family is the basic unit around which Asian society revolves.”
Supported by Tourism Authority of Thailand, the movie opens Sept. 5.
