Coast Guard receives two rescue vessels from Japan

By Betheena Kae Unite Two multi-role response vessels (MRRV) that completes the 10 loaned vessels from Japan have been commissioned in the service of the Philippine Coast Guard Thursday. Barko ng Republika ng Pilipinas (BRP) Bagacay (MRRV 4410) and BRP Cape Engaño (MRRV 4411) are the last two Parola class vessels arrived into the country from Japan. (Czar Dancel / MANILA BULLETIN) The new vessels were built by the Japan Marine United (JMU) Corporation in Yokohama Shipyard for the Coast Guard. Coast Guard and Transportation officials led the commissioning of the vessels at the PCH headquarters in Manila Thursday. After being commissioned, the vessels will be deployed as rescue vessels during disasters, relief operations and transport of personnel and logistical support. The series of multi-response vessels from Japan were named after the primary lighthouses in the country to denote the important role of the lighthouse as an aid to navigation to mariners. Since 2016, the 10 multi-role response vessels started being delivered into the country. The other eight vessels, which arrived in separate dates since then were commissioned as BRP Tubbataha, BPR Malabrigo, BRP Malapascua, BRP Capones, BRP Suluan, BRP Sindangan, BRP Cape San Agustin, and BRP Cabra. Meanwhile, a newly acquired anti-terrorism fast boat have been launched by Coast Guard District Palawan earlier this week. Commodore Allen Toribio, commander of the Coast Guard District (CGD) Palawan unveiled the newly acquired Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) last Monday. It was donated to the Philippines by the Japanese Government to strengthen its campaign against terrorism. The anti-terrorism fast boat, Toribio said, is fitted with 30 caliber machine gun and manned by highly-trained PCG personnel. The fast boat will act as deterrence and interdiction to extremist groups and other lawless elements, Toribio added.
