CALUMPIT, Bulacan -- Although the sun was peeping out on Wednesday, many residents here hurriedly walked through 1 to 5 feet of rising flood waters, ensuring that their valuables are moved out to higher and safer grounds.

More than a thousand of people, notably children, alarmed by the floodwater rushing from Nueva Ecija and Pampanga were seeking relief at evacuation centers at the Meysulao Multipurpose evacuation center; GMA-Kapuso Multi-EC Buguion; Dike/Tents, Barangay hall; San Miguel EC; Gatbuca tents and Northville 9 Elementary school.
According to Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Liz Mungcal, at around 6 in the evening last Wednesday, 30 villages were flooded in this coastal town.
She said Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado in a long distance call ordered them to immediately coordinate with Vice Governor Daniel R. Fernando and deploy rescue teams to help and guide the stranded residents to move them to a safer ground.
Mungcal reported that the 30 villages submerged under flood waters were Balungao 1 to 3 ft.; Bulusan 1 to 5ft.; Calizon, 1 to 3 ft.; Corazon, 1 ft.; Frances 1 to 3 ft.; Gatbuca 1 to 3 ft.; Gugo 1 to 4 ft.; Meysulao 1 to 3 ft.; Meyto 1 to 5 ft.; Panducot 1 to 2 ft.; Poblacion 1 to 2 ft.; San Jose 1 to 2 ft.; San Miguel 1 to 4 ft.; Sapang Bayan 2 to 3 ft.; Sta Lucia 2 to 5 ft.; Sto Nino 1 to 2 ft.; Sucol 1 to 4 ft.; Balite 1 ft.; Buguion 1 ft.; Caniogan 1 ft.; Palimbang 1 ft.; San Marcos 1 ft.; Iba Este 1 ft.; Iba O Este 1 ft.; Iba O Este Northville 9, 1 to 2 ft.; Piocruzcosa 1 ft.; Calumpang 1 ft.; Longos 1 ft.; Pungo 1 ft. and Sergio Bayan 1 foot.
The affected families in the 30 barangays were 17,862 or 75,709 individuals, but only 254 families or 1,062 individuals from 7 villages were evacuated to 7 evacuation centers.
Meanwhile, for the safety of all students in this town, Mayor Jessie P. De Jesus suspended the classes in all public and private levels.
As of 6 pm on Wednesday, the PDRRMC said that the water level at Angat Dam was 197.24 meters (spilling level 210 meters), Ipo Dam was 100.96 meters (spilling level 101 meters), while Bustos dam was 17.20 meters (spilling level 17.70 meters).
Meanwhile, SM Marilao sent its volunteers to flooded areas in Marilao town to provide relief to thousands of families affected by the recent calamities.
Through the SM Foundation Inc.’s Operation Tulong Express program, around 1,500 families were given relief packs or "Kalinga" packs containing a kilo of rice, canned sardines, and instant noodles as well as bottled waters all packed up in an eco-bag.
Operation Tulong Express (OPTE) is SM Foundation’s emergency response to victims of natural calamities and disasters. Its implementation includes close coordination with Savemore and Hypermarket, Mall Administration employees and volunteers who include the mall’s Customer Relations Service (CRS) team as well as Local Government Unit.
