CEBU CITY —A 26-year-old nurse was commended by the City Government of Mandaue after helping a motorist, who figured in an accident past midnight Tuesday in Mandaue.
Shaneen Grace Duterte received P20,000 cash from Mandaue mayor Luigi Quisumbing, who lauded the nurse for her “rare trait.”

(Mandaue City PIO / MANILA BULLETIN) “What she did was very commendable. We learned that she brings first-aid kit all the time, so the willingness to help is really in here. It’s a rare trait,” Quisumbing said after meeting Duterte last Wednesday. Duterte said she was driving home when she saw a group of people near the Maguikay bridge. When she saw that a man, who was later identified as Reynald Roa, slumped on the ground bleeding, Duterte parked her motorcycle by the road and rushed to check the motorist. “I just came from work at the time. I asked the people if someone had called an ambulance and when they said none, I immediately called one. While waiting for the ambulance, I tried to stop the bleeding by applying dressing using my gauzes,” said Duterte. The photo of Duterte clad in her nursing uniform and wearing a crash helmet while attending to the motorist went viral on the Internet. Duterte said she never thought what she did on that night will be given much attention and a commendation from the city government. “It (commendation) was overwhelming and I am thankful. I didn’t expect that this would happen because all I want is to save lives and not to be famous,” said Duterte, whose family is from San Fernando town, southern Cebu but has been staying in a rented house in Mandaue for a year. Duterte is a former member of the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation. She never had a hospital experience as a nurse until she moved to the Dr. Ignacio M. Cortes General Hospital in Mandaue last month. Quisumbing was with Mandaue vice mayor Carlo Fortuna during the meeting with Duterte. “The mayor thanked me for helping the motorist and that he is hoping that what I did should set an example that should be emulated by the community,” she said. Duterte believed that the incident made rounds in social media not just for her heroism but also because of her and the motorist’s family names. Some netizens asked if the two were related to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. “That’s the reason why it became trending because of our family names,” said Duterte with a laugh. When asked if she was related to the President, Duterte replied: “maybe a distant relative.”
