Charges of frustrated homicide and serious physical injuries were filed Monday against the two Filipino-Americans who allegedly stabbed Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) rookie Jeron Teng and two of his former college teammates during a brawl on the high-end bar strip in Taguig City last Sunday.
Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar, NCRPO director, said the charges were filed against EdmarLacanlale, 40, general construction contractor; and Williard Basili, 37, construction inspector, before the Taguig City Prosecutor’s Office. Both are reportedly dual citizens and reside in Barangay Putatan, Muntinlupa City.
Eleazar said the two are suspects in the stabbing of Teng, 24, who plays for the Alaska Aces; and his former fellow La Salle Green Archers – Norbert Torres, 28, who plays for Rain or Shine in the PBA; and Thomas Torres, who was set to play for Mandaluyong in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
Apart from the criminal raps, civil charges seeking damages will also be filed against the two Filipino-American citizens and the Department of Justice (DOJ) will be requested to issue a hold departure order (HDO) against them, a lawyer of Teng’s camp said.
Atty. Howard Calleja said the suspects will remain at the Taguig City Jail while the preliminary investigation is ongoing. The preliminary hearing is scheduled on June 11, he added.
But Eleazarunderscored that the charges filed against the suspects were bailable.
Earlier, Chief Superintendent Tom Apolinario, director of the Southern Police District (SPD), said Teng’s group had just left the Early Night Bar in Bonifacio Global City when they were attacked at the parking lot by the two suspects, one of them allegedly wearing a knife-ring.
Prior to the brawl, Teng’s group had exchanged insults with the suspects’ group outside the bar.
“Based sa investigation, pagdaan ng basketball players ay na-meet nila doon sa labas ng bar ang suspects tapos tinawag silang idol. Pero siguro 'yung response na 'yun is hindi expected so nagbigay ng mga hindi magagandang salita at pati na rin yung kasama nila ay nilait pa. Doon na nagsimula (Based on the investigation, the basketball players were walking when they met the suspects outside the bar and the latter called them idols. But the response must have been unexpected so there was an exchange of unpleasant words and even the companions were insulted. That started it all,”Eleazar said.
Earlier reports indicated that the suspects made a foul remark against Teng’s girlfriend, UAAP courtside reporter Jeanine Tsoi.
Tsoi was with Jeron’s father, former PBA player Alvin Teng, at the Taguig City Hall of Justice during the filing of the cases.
The former PBA player said that Jeron sustained two stab wounds in the back and in the side of his torso. He added that the bladed weapon almost hit his son’s lungs and that doctors gave Jeron’s wounds four weeks to heal.
Meanwhile, Eleazar said extra security has been provided for the victims to ensure their safety. He also reminded the public not to let alcohol take the best of them, especially when drinking in public places.
