1st batch of MMFF 2018 finalists bared

The Metro Manila Film Festival Executive Committee (MMFF-Execom), upon the recommendation of its Selection Committee, has announced the first four official entries to the MMFF 2018 based on script submission.

These are: Yam Laranas’ “Aurora” (Viva Films/Thriller) starring Anne Curtis; Barry Gonzales’ “Fantastica: The Princesses, The Prince And The Perya” (Star Cinema and Viva Films/Fantasy-Comedy) starring Vice Ganda, Maris Racal, Loisa Andalio, and Maymay Entrata; Jay Abello’s “Girl In The Orange Dress” (Quantum Films and MJM Production/Romance) starring Kim Chiu, Jessy Mendiola, Jericho Rosales, Sam Milby, Tom Rodriguez, and Kit Thompson, and “Popoy En Jack: The Puliscredibles” (CCM, MZET and APT Entertainment/Action-Comedy) starring Vic Sotto and Coco Martin, who also serves as the director.

The Selection Committee headed by National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera said that out of 24 scripts, the first four entries were picked based on the following criteria: 40% artistic excellence; 40% commercial appeal; 10% promotion of Filipino cultural and historical values, and 10% global appeal.

The Selection Committee headed by National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera said that out of 24 scripts, the first four entries were picked based on the following criteria: 40% artistic excellence; 40% commercial appeal; 10% promotion of Filipino cultural and historical values, and 10% global appeal.
“Our selection committee had a difficult time making our choices given the quality of the films. We have to thank them for their exhaustive and thorough deliberation, for their passion and dedication to make this festival successful,” said Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and MMFF overall chairman Danilo Lim in Filipino.
“We hope this year’s festival will serve as an instrument for an important change not only for the Filipino cinema, but also for the whole country,” he added.
The next phase for the Full Length Feature category will be the finished film submission. The films with the duly accomplished application forms and complete requirements can be submitted to the MMFF Secretariat until Sept. 21.

The remaining four official entries shall be selected from all submitted finished films to complete the eight official entries to the 2018 MMFF.
The deadline of submission for the Short Film category is on Aug. 31.
Noel Ferrer, MMFF spokeperson, encourages students to enter works to the category.
“The original date of submission for the shorts was July 15 but we decided to move it because we want many students to join the category,” he explained.

Now on its 44th edition, MMFF is the biggest, most popular and most anticipated film festival in the country.
Lumbera asked Filipino moviegoers in his final speech at the launch to continously support the festival and its causes.
“Let’s support our films. These films give happiness to each and everyone as it give values about family, love and friendship. We all know that MMFF also has different beneficiaries, so we hope for another successful festival this year,” he said.
