Ex-congressman, 2 others killed during La Union poll rally

ÀGOO, LA UNION – Former La Union congressman Eufranio Eriguel and two of his companions were shot dead during a campaign rally Saturday night in Agoo, La Union.

Former La Union 2nd District representative Eufranio Chan Eriguel, Bobby Ordinario, and Mac Roel Tuvera were shot while attending a miting de avance for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan candidates and were pronounced dead at the La Union Medical Center in Agoo.
Police said the assailants arrived at the rally in Barangay Capas plaza in two vehicles, a Mitsubishi Montero and a white Toyota Innova. They got off the vehicles and started firing at Eriguel and his group.
Eight other people who were wounded in the shooting: Joland Molina, 36, Jimmie Pama, 25, Romie Rey Galera, Barangay Capas, Antonio Peralta Jr., 37, Robert
Jacla, 40, residents of Barangay San Marcos, Patrick Manabat, Melody Inbesan, 28, Manuel Gayo, 34 , all from Barangay Capas.
Eriguel’s wife, Sandra, the incumbent representative, survived by hiding inside a vehicle.
In April, 2016, Eriguel survived a bomb attack on his car that wounded several people.
Senior Supt. Genaro Sapiera, La Union provincial police chief, told Manila Bulletin politics is one the possible angles being explored by investigators.
Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III called on police to "quickly" solve the killing of Eriguel, who was a member of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
“The Philippine National Police (PNP) must forcefully, quickly, and effectively respond to this outrage”, Pimentel said in a statement Sunday.
Senator Joseph Victor Ejercito also denounced the killing of Eriguel as a “cowardly act.”
Eriguel was one of the government officials named by President Duterte in 2016 for allegedly being involved in drug trafficking. He was eventually cleared from the narco-list, a later report said.
Cebu mayor survives attack
Another politician branded by the President as a narco-politician, Vicente Loot, survived an assassination attempt early Sunday morning.
Loot, the mayor of Daanbantayan town in Cebu, was shot at as he and his family were arriving at the town’s wharf.
Loot, a retired police general, was unharmed but his two drivers and the nanny of his grandchildren were wounded.
Arnel Rosario, 47, and Ruben Castañeda, 50, sustained gunshot wounds in the hip, while 26-year-old Jerly Rosel was hit in the right leg.
A porter in the wharf was also wounded.
The shooting happened as the pumpboat boarded by Loot and his family was docking at Maya Port, said Supt. Virgilio Bayon-on, information officer of the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO).
Loot was with his wife, Vice Mayor Malou Loot, and stepson Sun Shimura, a member of the Cebu Provincial Board. Shimura’s wife and their five children were also aboard the boat. The Loots came from Malapascua Island where they attended a fiesta Saturday.
Bayon-on said Loot’s two drivers and the nanny were the first to disembark from the boat. They were walking towards a parked van when two gunmen opened fire.
The gunmen had three companions, who stayed in a white van that was used as a getaway vehicle.
A witness said the van’s license plate bore the digits 5884.
“The witness was not able to get the complete license plate but we are checking if there is a security camera in the area that may have captured the van’s plate number,” said Bayon-on.
The wounded victims were treated at a hospital.
Loot was one of the five police generals who were tagged by President as drug protectors.
Loot has denied the President’s accusations.
