Jennylyn Mercado: Pinay version of Lara Croft?

With her Amazonian physique, it’s no wonder Jennylyn Mercado is creating buzz as being comparable to a fictional character famously played in the movies by Angelina Jolie.

In a recent interview, however, the Kapuso actress laughed off the idea that she’s the Pinay version of "Tomb Raider's" Lara Croft.
“Ngek ang layo,” she said, giggling. “Kayo naman baka mag-expect kayo ng sobra. Hindi naman umabot sa ganu’n. Pero siguro dahil pareho lang ’yung damit then ’yung sa buhok naman naka-ponytail lang hindi naman siya naka-braid.”
“Baka siguro dahil ’yung itsura lang nu’ng outfit medyo malapit du’n sa Lara Croft,” she added.
Note that the lead character of "Tomb Raider" is a highly intelligent, athletic, and beautiful archaeologist who ventures into ancient tombs and hazardous ruins around the world.
On the upcoming series "The Cure," Jennylyn is plays Charity, a licensed nurse who eventually quits her job to focus more on her family. She is the husband of Gregory Salvador played by Tom Rodriguez.
According to the actress, her character really loves her mother-in-law who unfortunately has cancer. The latter is played by Irma Adlawan.
“First ipapakita du’n sa character ni Charity ang hinhin niya, very loving na tutok lang siya sa family niya. Tapos hindi nila ine-expect na darating sa point na mas palaban pa siya kaysa sa ibang characters kasi darating ’yung time na magkakaroon ng gulo,” she shared.
Jennylyn said audiences should watch out for the intense fight scenes and risky stunts on the show.
The 31-year-old actress is do dedicated in playing her role to the point that she doesn't want to have any stunt double.
“I mean kung kaya naman kasi bakit hindi ’di ba?,” she said. “So sinabi ko na ‘Hindi Direk kung kaya okay ako, gagawin ko kasi mahirap na ’yung halatang iba ’yung gumawa.’ Kasi siyempre ’pag meron kang double medyo nahahalata na iba ’yung galaw, iba ’yung form ng body, iba ’yung buhok so mas maganda kung mas realistic lang.”
“Tsaka masarap din sa feeling na na-experience mo ’yung mga buwis buhay stunt o talon. Kaya kami talaga ’yung gagawa kung kaya,” she added.
Of course a fit body is needed.
Although Jennylyn is known for his fitness routine, the actress admitted she had not worked out for more than a month now.
“Gusto ko lang magpahinga. Ewan ko parang tumatanda na ata ako. Sabi ko nga ‘Mag 31 pa lang ako bakit ba ayaw kong tumayo ng kama,’” she shared, laughing.
She has also relaxed her diet regimen.
“I mean nagtatrabaho ka, nagpupuyat ka tapos magdi-diet ka pa? Papatayin mo sarili mo. ’Wag na. Pagod ka na, puyat, stress ka na so kumain ka ng mabuti.”
Unexpected
The actress feels flattered to have snagged the role.
However, Jennylyn revealed she was shocked upon initially hearing about the traits of her character.
“Hindi ko ine-expect kasi nu’ng una kasing binigay sa akin ’yung concept akala ko parang may pagka-suspense lang siya tapos drama. Hindi ko alam na aabot siya sa medyo physical pero na excite ako nu’ng gusto nila umabot ’yung character ko sa talagang nag fi-fight scenes para magamit ko ’yung alam ko."
Recall that the actress knows martial arts particularly Balintawak Arnis.
Still, it was a challenge for her to do fight scenes as she is used to doing reaction training than defending exercise.
“Hindi ako sanay na bina-block kasi nahihirapan ako na parang ‘Paano ba ito? Ito muna tapos ito naman ’yung sundo?’ Hirap ako sa movements kasi hindi ko natatandaan, talagang makakalimutin ako,” she maintained.
Trivia: This is the reason viewers can’t see her perform and dance in live shows.
“Hindi na nila ako pinapasayaw kasi napapagod sila na ‘Sige na ’wag ka ng sumayaw hindi mo mapick-up,’” she added in jest. “Hindi ko alam kung bakit pero siguro hindi kaya ng brain ko pagsabayin at mag-connect sa body ko.”
But she explained she has been like that ever since.
“Matagal talaga ako maka-catch-up. Like sa taping ’yung sa first week medyo nangangapa pa ako sa character ko kahit isang buwan na ako nagta-taping pero ’pag nagamay ko na ’yung role eh dirediretsyo na naman,” she explained.
Aside from “The Cure” Jennylyn is set to be seen on the big screen anew by last quarter of this year.
According to her, the upcoming project is one of her dream roles.
“Kasi ’yun na lang halos ang hindi ko nagagawa na role. And gusto ko ’yung mga ganu’n na hindi masyado mabait, may dark side,” she said.
