Government worker nabbed for violating gun ban

By Anthony Giron Camp Gen. Pantaleon Garcia, Imus, Cavite – A government employee was arrested Tuesday night at a police checkpoint in Dasmarinas town for gun possession. Jayson Cabello Herjas, 36, of Barangay Salitran I, Dasmariñas, was the second gun ban violator to be arrested in the province since Saturday, the first day of the barangay and Sagguniang Kabataan (SK) election period. The local Commission on Elections (Comelec) and police imposed the gun ban as the 30-day countdown to the May 14 election started. There were orders from the Cavite Police Provincial Office (PPO) to conduct a tight watch on civilians carrying guns in the province’s seven districts. Cavite has gained notoriety in the past as the land of a thousand guns, the gun culture being deeply rooted in the province until this day. Senior Inspector Jojit Ramos and his team arrested Herjas after he was found carrying a bag that contained a .45 1911 China-made pistol, a black holster, one magazine, and eight.45 cal. rounds. Herjas, who riding a motorcycle, was actually pulled over for driving without a helmet. SPO1 Ginnie S.T. San Antonio, case investigator, said that a charge for Violations of Republic Act 4136 and 10591 In Relation to Omnibus Election Code (driving without a helmet and gun possession) will be filed against Herjas. On Sunday night, Norberto Rodillo Eslabon, 42, a bantay-dagat (sea watch) man, was arrested at another checkpoint after he was caught with a 9mm automatic air soft gun on Trece-Indang Road in Barangay Luciano, Trece Martires City.
