Korean national wanted for fraud arrested by BI

By Jeffrey Damicog A Korean national wanted in his country for large-scale fraud has been arrested by Philippine government authorities. Pixabay / Manila Bulletin Pixabay / Manila Bulletin Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary Erickson Balmes identified the arrested Korean national as Chun Taejoon, 51. Balmes said Taejoon was arrested last Wednesday night by the Bureau of Immigration’s Fugitive Search Unit (BI-FSU) along Kalayaan Ave., Diliman, Quezon City. Citing reports from the BI, Balmes said Taejoon was arrested “for being an undocumented alien and for posing risk to public safety and security being a fugitive from justice.” The Korean Embassy, which sought the arrest of Taejoon since July, 2013, had told the BI that the fugitive has been “wanted for prosecution in his country for large scale fraud.” The Embassy explained the fugitive defrauded 10,000 victims amounting to US$100 million in a construction investment scam. The embassy said that the Eastern District Court of Seoul had already issued a warrant for his arrest way back in October 13, 2005 and that his passport had already expired on June 3, 2009, and had not been renewed since. Meanwhile, Balmes said the Korean fugitive has been detained at the BI’s Warden Facility.
