Vargas wants Gregorio as sec-gen

by Waylon Galvez Newly elected Philippine Olympic Committee president Ricky Vargas is tapping trusted lieutenant Patrick 'Pato' Gregorio as his secretary-general. Vargas revealed his choice, which has to be approved by the POC Executive Committee, during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards Night last Tuesday at the Manila Hotel. “Pato is a close colleague of mine, I’ve worked with him for so long, he’s been secretary-general for eight years and currently vice president of ABAP,” said Vargas, who won the POC presidency two weeks ago. Asked of his thoughts on the appointment, Gregorio said he has accepted the task, “without thinking; I can't say no to Mr. Vargas." Aside from Gregorio, Vargas said that he would also propose the naming of sepak takraw president Karen Caballero as POC deputy sec-gen on Monday’s board meeting at the POC headquarters at the PhilSports Complex (formerly ULTRA) in Pasig City. Joey Romasanta, POC first vice president and karatedo chief, said that Gregorio, Maynilad vice president, is eligible for the fulltime job based on the POC bylaws under Article 7, Section 7. “It states that the Secretary General shall be appointed by the President subject to the approval of the executive board. Provided he served as president, vice president or secretary-general of his NSA for at least 2 years,” said Romasanta. Aside from Vargas, members of the EXECOMM are recently elected chairman Bambol Tolentino of cycling, Romasanta, second vice president Jeff Tamayo of soft tennis, treasurer Julian Camacho of wushu and auditor Jonne Go of canoe-kayak. Joining them are board directors Clint Arangas, Robert Mananquil, Cynthia Carrion, Butch Pichay, Philippine representative to the International Olympic Committee Mikee Cojuangco Jaworski and outgoing POC president Peping Cojuangco.
